INTERCART FUNCTIONS THAT DIFFER FROM INTERLINEAR

The following information presumes that you are familiar with the operation of a normal Interlinear panel and indicates the differences in operation between Interlinear and the InterCart Upgrade.

Translator

The VTR Protocol Translator function is replaced with a Cart Protocol Translator.  The behaviour of the translator may be influenced by turning the TRANSLATOR key on and off.
When the translator is on, all commands received by the RS422 cable from the Automation System are executed and all Status Requests are returned.  Meanwhile all the manual controls are available for immediate use should the Automation System fail.  Beware that any manual editing of the playlist may be overwritten at any time by the Automation System unless the translator is switched off.
Because the Cart Emulation requires it, while the translator is on, clips are automatically removed from the list as soon as they have been played.
When the translator is off, communication with the Automation System continues as normal.  Status Requests are returned so that the Automation System is kept updated.  Transport commands are acknowledge by InterCart but are not executed.  Playlist modifications are also acknowledged by InterCart but are discarded and not implemented.  In this way InterCart can run manually for an extended period without disconnection from the Automation System.
When operating with the translator off, clips are not automatically removed from the list when they have been played.  This function is useful when rehearsing and saves entering the playlist again before transmission.  We recommend that InterCart is operated with the Translator switched on.

VTR

InterCart does not support transfers to and from tape and cannot control a VTR.  Tape transfers must be implemented using a standard Interlinear panel or other such device.
The function of the VTR A port is also changed.  This port outputs the current playlist, updated whenever any changes occur, to a second InterCart panel or real Cart machine so that a redundant on air backup can be implemented.  If used in this way, the output from VTR A on the main InterCart should be connected to the Translator port of the backup InterCart.

Record

InterCart does not support recording.  Material must be recorded on the server by a standard Interlinear or other controller.

A/B

The function of the A/B switch has been extended to cover the four playback channels A, B, C, D.  Some switching occurs automatically in order to keep the top item in the list displayed on the top line of the panel display.  The A/B can be used to switch sequentially through the channels in alphabetical order.  The lamp in the switch lights to indicate which channel is currently selected, and the selected channel letter becomes visible on the top line of the panel display.

  • For channel A the switch lamp does not light, and A shows on the top of the panel display.

  • For channel B the switch lamp lights continuously, and B is on the top of the panel display.

  • For channel C the switch lamp flashes quickly, and C shows on the top of the panel display.

  • For channel D the switch lamp flashes slowly, and D shows on the top of the panel display.

The following keys operate independently of the state of the ABCD switch:  PLAY, LAST, GOTO START and GOTO CURSOR.  Please see the relevant sections later in this manual for the difference in operation, particularly with the PLAY key.
